A guide to hosting the ultimate King’s Coronation Party

If there’s one thing the Royal Family know how to do it’s how to throw a party. The King’s coronation is set to take place on Saturday the 6th of May and the festivities will span over three days (including a one-off bank holiday for us on the Monday – yay!) Featuring two epic processions, a religious service and a concert at Windsor Castle, this kind of event will be discussed for generations to come.

People from across the nation, and worldwide, will be watching from their homes as the country marks the presence of a new monarch but many will be celebrating on the streets with friends and family – as was the case for the Queens Platinum Jubilee. So if you’re thinking of hosting a street party to mark the occasion then this guide covers all the basics to help you get started.

Number one

Pick a time, date and place

The first thing to do is decide when and where you’re going to hold your party. The coronation itself takes place on Saturday the 6th of May however you also have the option of throwing the party on Sunday or Monday as well (especially if the weather is looking better on those days!) Then decide where you’re going to throw your party, will it be a street party or will it be a garden party?

Permissions and insurance

number two

If you are hoping to throw a street party then you’ll need to apply for permission from the local authorities to secure the road closure. It is likely that there will be an online application process where you will need to provide detailed information about what you have planned and how health and safety will be managed, you may also require licenses if you’re planning on selling food or alcohol. Although it isn’t a legal requirement you may require proof of liability insurance before the local authorities grant permissions and road closures. So make sure to give yourself plenty of time to take care of all of this admin before getting carried away with all of the more exciting stuff!

number three

Food and Drink

Traditionally coronation chicken sandwiches will be served followed by a slab of victoria sponge cake with a nice cool glass of Pimms, however, you can serve whatever you like at your party. It’s a good idea to ask everyone to bring a dish and drink to share the load and aim to cater to a wide variety of people. If you’re in need of some inspiration The Big Lunch has lots of recipes for the classics such as scotch eggs, prawn cocktails and trifles.

Decorations

number four

We have a couple of wonderful decorations for your Coronation party that will not only bring the party vibes but will also serve as a keepsake of this historic occasion afterwards! One of the most effective ways of transforming your street is to string up bunting between the houses in a criss-cross pattern to unite the street and hang flags in your windows or from your porch. Add long tables down the middle of the street and ask people to bring their tablecloths to decorate and create a patchwork effect. Ask everyone to bring their own crockery and cutlery to keep costs down and be more environmentally friendly, display your delicious cakes on mismatched cake stands down the centre of the tables and fill little vases with freshly picked flowers from your gardens. Bask in the community spirit as you come together with friends, family and neighbours and transform your street into something beautiful!

number five

Spread the word

Once you’ve got all of the admin out of the way and all of your applications have been approved it’s time to spread the word and send out your invitations. We have five party invitations with different designs from the union jack bunting to a crowned welly boot perfect for the occasion from just £9.75!

However you decide to celebrate this event we hope you have a wonderful, 3-day weekend with friends and family.
